Position Purpose

The Director of Strategic Communications is responsible for planning, development and implementation of all Vivent Health’s integrated public relations, external communications and marketing plans, including but not limited to website and social media presence, media relations, advertising, email communications and analytics. The position will create and strategically execute an innovative, comprehensive plan to increase Vivent Health’s public profile, visibility, and brand recognition at the regional and national level using thought leadership positioning and brand awareness through public relations, marketing, digital, web and social media communication, targeted print and electronic communication strategies.  The Director supervises and leads the efforts of a communications and marketing team and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels and plays a critical role in the success of fundraising and programs.

Scope of Responsibilities

Vivent Health is one of the nation’s largest providers of HIV prevention, care and treatment services with a budget approaching $130 million and employing over 400 professionals.

The unique, nationally recognized Vivent Health HIV Medical Home model of care assures that everyone with HIV has access to medical, dental, mental health and social services and provides the best opportunity for patients to achieve high quality health outcomes. Vivent Health also provides aggressive HIV prevention services to gay men, injection drug users and others at the highest risk for HIV infection. 

Vivent Health currently operates in multiple states nationwide. It embraces a Market Culture to increase access to care, enhance quality outcomes and achieve and surpass financial performance expectations and has an aggressive plan to expand into additional states.

Essential Functions

Strategic communications and marketing

  • Leading Vivent Health’s successful and effective strategic communications and marketing efforts by developing and leading the execution of a proactive, innovative, analytics-driven, and comprehensive communications strategy that includes:
    • a comprehensive and broad public relations, external communications, and marketing plan and program that will enhance Vivent Health’s image and brand position within the marketplace and the general public;
    • all agency, public relations, external communications and marketing activities and materials, including publications, media relations, traditional and digital advertising, and social media marketing strategy;
    • an enhanced focus on external and digital communications, in addition to social media, as a priority
  • Identifying ad hoc issues requiring attention and recommending and executing options for achieving goal of enhancing the Vivent Health image and brand
  • Through a highly collaborative process with Vivent Health executive and senior leaders, lead strategic communications initiatives with multiple groups including prospective and current donors and supporters; current and prospective patients and clients; community leaders; local and national media; and other constituencies as identified
  • Ensure articulation of Vivent Health’s desired image and brand position, assure consistent communication of image and position throughout the agency, and assure communication of image and position to all constituencies
  • Provide leadership in the areas of editorial direction, design, production and distribution of all Vivent Health publications
  • Coordinate media interest in Vivent Health and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests
  • Develop, coordinate and oversee content marketing, providing technical assistance and resource materials as required to assist programmatic areas in the marketing, communications and positioning of their services and activities
  • Provide guidance to all programmatic areas on strategic communications including marketing, advertising, communications, and public relations
  • Regularly coordinate and conduct research into changing market trends, monitor trends, and make recommendations for needed adjustments in agency approach to its marketing activities
  • Lead projects as assigned, such as cause-related marketing, awareness campaigns and support for special events


Planning and budgeting

  • Develop long- and short-term goals, plan and budget for the marketing, communication and public relations program and its activities, monitor progress towards goals, assure adherence and evaluate program performance
  • Maintain current knowledge on developments in the fields of marketing, communications and public relations and integrate new developments to allow Vivent Health to operate with initiative and innovation


Organizational strategy

  • Participate in efforts to increase health outcomes for patients by developing a strategic perspective in agency direction, programs, and services, and by seeking and sharing regular input from Vivent Health’s key constituencies regarding the quality of programs and services
  • Drive innovation in strategic communications to support patient, donor and stakeholder engagement and retention
  • Act as an internal consultant to bring attention and solutions to priorities and opportunities for growth
  • Assist in the formulation of policies to ensure the integrity of the agency
  • Collaborate with internal customers, including operations and fundraising, and help build Vivent Health’s National Strategy


Management

  • Recruit, train, appraise, supervise, support, and develop qualified staff and volunteers, maintaining a climate that attracts and retains top quality personnel and promotes an environment conducive to engagement, empowerment, creativity, accountability, and productivity.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned by the Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in innovative, strategic communications including marketing, external communications or public relations with demonstrated success in the design and execution of marketing, communications and public relations activities.
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical leadership and organizational skills.
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of advertising and awareness campaigns, including those for fund development and programs/services for diverse communities
  • Demonstrated and successful written, verbal, video and other electronic/digital communication experience including but not limited to writing web content, press releases, making presentations and negotiating with media
  • Experience developing and managing budgets, hiring, training, supervising and developing staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
  • Experience in marketing team management; providing leadership across multiple functions.
  • Experience creating fully integrated marketing campaigns, utilizing Email and Text campaigns, digital marketing, website efficiencies, outdoor media and traditional media with measured results.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, digital expertise, Google analytics or another website tracking tool
  • Experience establishing branding and creative direction.
  • Advanced experience in public relations, marketing, or communications capacity.
  • Proven experience working with social media, Google Analytics, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), web accessibility best practices, web content management, and web application testing.
  • Demonstrated appetite for innovation and eagerness to continue to learn as new media options emerge.
  • Professionalism appropriate to Vivent Health with internal and external audiences, including industry partners.
  • Experience working in highly collaborative environments requiring interpersonal communication competence, initiative, listening, and emotional intelligence. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Last, but not least, demonstrated value and passion for the persuasive power of story.

  • Knowledge of health and social service needs of persons with HIV/AIDS is preferred.
