Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the Director of Health Promotion, the Mpowerment Coordinator is responsible for implementing a community-level HIV prevention program known locally as “The Q” and “La Q.” The Mpowerment Coordinator oversees Mpowerment staff who help run and implement the Mpowerment program, including the Health Promotion Marketing Specialist. The Mpowerment Coordinator ensures continuous recruitment for and implementation of the program by using innovative approaches such as harm reduction, behavioral theories, and motivational strategies in various community settings.  To plan, coordinate, and ensure the execution of all programmatic aspects of The Q Austin, this position assigns and monitors staff activities and participates in designing, preparing, and implementing recruitment strategies for small group discussions, including developing and reviewing promotional materials to make sure that marketing is both reflective of the community we serve and culturally competent. Futhermore, the Mpowerment Coordinator plans and facilitates regular core group meetings, as well as social events that present safer sex messages, and participates in monitoring and maintaining The Q’s social media outreach activities.


Scope of Responsibilities

Vivent Health is one of the nation’s largest providers of HIV prevention, care and treatment services with a budget approaching $130 million and employing over 400 professionals. 

The unique, nationally recognized Vivent Health HIV Medical Home model of care assures that everyone with HIV has access to medical, dental, mental health and social services and provides the best opportunity for patients to achieve high quality health outcomes. Vivent Health also provides aggressive HIV prevention services to gay men, injection drug users and others at the highest risk for HIV infection. 

Vivent Health currently operates in multiple states nationwide. It embraces a Market Culture to increase access to care, enhance quality outcomes and achieve and surpass financial performance expectations and has an aggressive plan to expand into additional states.

Essential Functions

  • Plan, coordinate, and ensure the execution of all programmatic aspects of The Q Austin.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise young gay men from the Austin community to participate in Mpowerment activities.
  • Recruit men from within the Mpowerment project to assist in co-facilitating small safer sex educational groups for young gay and bisexual men.
  • Hire, coach, guide, and develop Mpowerment staff and Marketing Specialist
  • Monitor all quality management needs for the Mpowerment Program per Vivent Health's QM plan
  • Support the daily activities of Mpowerment staff which includes strategizing outreach and planning social events.
  • Participate in designing, preparing, and implementing recruitment strategies for small group discussions, including the development and review of promotional materials.
  • Assist staff in recruiting for and coordinating regular core group meetings and ongoing small group discussions using core elements of the community-level intervention Mpowerment.
  • Facilitate appropriate and positive discussions focused on talking with and about young gay men, gay male sexuality, sexual behavior, and HIV/STD prevention.
  • Monitor and maintain on-line/social media outreach activities.
  • Analyze program metrics and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Prepare programmatic reports under the guidance of the Director of Health Promotion.
  • Participate and collaborate in departmental, agency, and local community meetings.
  • Participate in the AIDS Walk on an annual basis.
  •  Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Health Promotion.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in conducting community outreach or HIV prevention service delivery to gay men required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in successfully recruiting and facilitating small group discussions required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of social media or marketing experience required.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) skilled preferred
  • Must have and be willing to maintain a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Must be able to travel within and throughout Austin
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to HIV/AIDS, PrEP, and alcohol and other drug (AODA) issues.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency including the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with individuals from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • An Influenza vaccine is required of all new employees at the time of employment, and is required thereafter on an annual basis.
  • A tuberculin/TB skin test is required of all new employees at the time of employment, and may be required thereafter on an annual basis, depending on position.
