Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the Mpowerment Coordinator and with the guidance of the Director of Health Promotion, the Mpowerment Specialist is responsible for implementing a community-level, evidence-based intervention utilizing the Mpowerment prevention model for young gay, bisexual, and questioning men between the ages of 18 and 44 in Austin. The Mpowerment Specialist uses print materials, social media, and face-to-face recruitment to promote Mpowerment program activities. The Mpowerment Specialist is also responsible for facilitating volunteer participation, facilitating small and large group events, promoting The Q events, and conducting online and offsite outreach as needed.

Scope of Responsibilities

The unique, nationally recognized Vivent Health HIV Medical Home model of care assures that everyone with HIV has access to medical, dental, mental health and social services and provides the best opportunity for patients to achieve high quality health outcomes. Vivent Health also provides aggressive HIV prevention services to gay men, injection drug users and others at the highest risk for HIV infection. 

Vivent Health currently operates in multiple states nationwide. It embraces a Market Culture to increase access to care, enhance quality outcomes and achieve and surpass financial performance expectations and has an aggressive plan to expand into additional states.

Position Responsibilities  

  • Assist in the implementation of and recruitment for prevention programs of The Q Austin and other Health Promotion services by using innovative approaches such as harm reduction, behavioral theories, and motivational strategies in various community settings.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and implementing small and large social events in an effort to recruit young gay, bisexual, transgender, and curious men ages 18–44 into the Mpowerment program.
  • Recruit men from within the Mpowerment program to assist in co-facilitating small safer sex educational groups for young gay, bisexual, transgender, and curious men.
  • Participate in designing and preparing special events activities, including the development and review process for promotional materials.
  • Collaborate with the Mpowerment staff to recruit, train, and supervise young gay, bisexual, transgender, and curious men to participate in The Q Austin activities.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Specialist on developing marketing materials to implement outreach activities at selected events prioritizing young gay, bisexual, transgender, and curious men.
  • Conduct HIV/AIDS prevention-focused outreach and distribute promotional materials to recruit for HIV testing
  • Contribute to developing and implementing innovative campaigns to reach individuals who are not currently accessing HIV services in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Maintain appropriate and timely documentation of all prevention services delivered.
  • Maintain adequate working and safety conditions in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Participate and collaborate in departmental, agency, and local community meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with communities of diverse cultures, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and gender identities required.
  • One year experience working in HIV/AIDS prevention, public health, social service, or health promotion preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, behavioral health or related field strongly preferred.
  • One year experience organizing educational programs and/or facilitating groups preferred.
  • Training in harm reduction principles and motivational interviewing preferred
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) skills preferred.
  • Must have and be willing to maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Must be willing and able to travel within and throughout Austin.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to HIV/AIDS, PrEP, and alcohol and other drug (AODA) issues.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency including the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with individuals from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • An Influenza vaccine is required of all new employees at the time of employment, and is required thereafter on an annual basis.
  • A tuberculin/TB skin test is required of all new employees at the time of employment, and may be required thereafter on an annual basis, depending on position.
